Professional basketball player Jimmy Butler has sought to be expelled from the lawsuit by Binance for alleged involvement in the promotion of unregistered securities.

In a July 24 filing, Butler’s lawyers argued that the three tweets Butler tweeted while promoting Binance between February 2 and February 13, 2022 did not mention so-called unregistered securities and therefore could not help promote them.

Calls from lawyers to Binance and celebrities

The basketball star’s lawyers claimed that he did not mention any alleged securities, but instead warned about celebrities promoting crypto investments. They claimed that Butler’s tweets did not suggest any investment and instead helped out with celebrity crypto endorsements. Additionally, they urged potential Binance clients to do their own research on crypto investments.

Butler was named in a class action lawsuit in March, along with Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao and YouTubers Graham Stephan and Ben Armstrong, known as BitBoy Crypto. In 2022, Binance signed with Butler, the All-Star of the National Basketball Association Miami Heat, to promote the change on the way to that year’s Super Bowl. It was first featured on February 2, 2022 in a video from Binance promoting a free collection of nonfungible tokens (NFTs). Butler tweeted two more videos later that month on February 7 and February 13.
