Next generation DDR5 DRAM was recently introduced alongside Intel’s Alder Lake-S desktop processor lineup, but we may not see these kits anytime soon. Because most of the DDR5 RAM kits don’t seem to be in retail stocks yet. The reason for this is undoubtedly the ongoing global chip shortage.

Although DDR5 RAMs do not play a leading role in the global chip shortage, they are still an actor in this industry. While the silicon crisis is playing a role in many areas these days, DDR5 is no exception. However, according to the information received, there is no such a big problem in the production of DDR5 chips. The reason behind this is that they use 14nm or higher lithography, which is less dense compared to the latest technologies such as 7nm used in CPUs and GPUs. The main reason behind the supply shortage is said to be the built-in power management center in DDR5.

The integrated circuits used for this power management were previously found on motherboards. It has now been moved to the DIMM itself to allow more control over the DRAM, resulting in longer lead times. That’s why memory manufacturers seem a bit undecided about DDR5 for now, which means we’ll have to wait a bit for it to go into stock.
