Which mobile operating system is better is a topic that has been debated for years. Instagram executive Adam Mosseri touched on the subject earlier this week, rekindling the debate that has been going on since the inception of smartphones.

“Android is now better than iOS,” Mosseri said on Threads, in response to a question from YouTuber Marques Brownlee (aka MKBHD). Mosseri didn’t elaborate on why he thinks Android is superior, but his use of the words “better now” suggests he previously thought Apple’s iOS was superior.

Both Android and iOS have enjoyed tremendous success since the first iPhone and Android phones were released in 2007 and 2008 respectively. The answer to the question of which operating system is more popular depends on where you are in the world.

More Americans now prefer iPhones running iOS to Google’s Android, with iPhones first surpassing Android in September 2022, according to data from Counterpoint Research. As of the first quarter of 2023, Apple has an estimated 52% of the US smartphone market share, with Samsung in second place with a share of 27%. Google, Lenovo and other brands make up the remaining percentage.

Apple did not release the final figures on exactly how many iOS users there are worldwide. But during the 2023 Google I/O developer conference, Sameer Samat, Android’s VP of product management, announced that there are 3 billion active Android devices.

Statistica, on the other hand, estimates that Android, the mobile operating system preferred by most phone manufacturers except Apple, is much larger than iOS, with 70.8% of the worldwide market share as of July 2023. Apple’s iOS has the second highest market share at 28.4%. These estimates include smartphones as well as other devices running mobile operating systems such as tablets.
