If you still have a device running Android KitKat, your device will lose a lot of functionality next month when Google ends the software by cutting support for Google Play Services, which is a core part of KitKat’s operating system.

End of the road for Android KitKat

Google introduced KitKat, also known as Android 4.4, in September 2013, and the operating system is pretty primitive by today’s standards. “Since then, we’ve introduced many innovative improvements and features that are not available in KikKat for Android,” says Google. On the other hand, Android KitKat is almost never used. Google says that as of July 2023, the number of active devices using KikKat is under 1 percent as more and more users update to the latest Android versions. The software giant will therefore no longer support KitKat in future versions of Google Play services.

While KikKat may be the next member of the Google graveyard, the operating system has a notable place in Android history. When the operating system was released in 2013, it was well liked by the users because it increased the speed of Android and offered a cleaner interface. The first phone to carry this operating system was Google’s Nexus 5 model.

However, with the discontinuation of support, any device using KitKat will be unable to use various applications. Google Play Services offers many third-party services such as location tracking, mapping, payment processing, online advertising and sign-in. Google ended support for KitKat’s predecessor, Android Jelly Bean, in August 2021. So users can expect the company to do the same for Android Lollipop or Android 5.0 next year.
