Chinese company Three Gorges Energy commissioned the world’s largest offshore wind turbine MingYang Smart Energy MySE 16-260 with a capacity of 16 MW.

MingYang Smart Energy MySE 16-260 has a rotor radius of 260 meters, each blade is 123 meters long and weighs 54 tons. The giant wind turbine generates 34.2 kWh of energy per revolution, and the turbine will power a total of 36,000 Chinese homes.

Target is a 70-storey building-high wind turbine

The giant rotor is attached to a 152-metre tower, comparable to the height of a 50-story building. At the top of the tower is the engine room of the power plant. The total weight of the structure is 385 tons. It can withstand winds of up to 287 kilometers per hour.

MingYang Smart Energy MySE 16-260 is located in the Taiwan Strait. According to Three Gorges Energy, this region experiences “near storm conditions” with wind speeds of around 51 kilometers per hour for more than 200 days a year. Most interestingly, China will continue to increase the size of its wind turbines.
Towards the end of the year, installation and even commissioning of an 18 MW turbine with a tower taller than a 70-storey building could begin.
