Phoenix processors, introduced by AMD last January, combined Zen4 and RDNA3 architecture for both mobile and handheld consoles. So much so that we saw these chips power devices like ROG Ally and AOKZOE A1 Pro. Now, AMD has started preparations for Strix Point APUs based on the Zen 5 and RDNA 3.5 architecture. AMD Ryzen 8050, which will be included in the family today, was displayed on the test platform of AMD engineers, MilkyWay@Home.

AMD Strix Point APUs appear on the horizon

AMD “Strix Point” APUs will be the successors of Phoenix APUs, which are mostly seen in handheld consoles today. Today, a 12-core processor has emerged that matches the OPN (AMD product code) and the CPU family/device ID “Strix Point”. This processor is stated to be Ryzen 8050.

It was previously rumored that the AMD Strix Point would have a 12-core configuration, potentially combining four Zen 5 and eight Zen 5c cores (8+4), or an additional four Zen 5c (dense) cores to eight Zen 5 cores.

The test software used in the new leak is unfortunately not a traditional processor benchmark. Therefore, the details are not included. However, we can say that AMD confirms the presence of 12 cores in Strix Point. In addition, the AMD Strix series will also have a 16-core version called “Halo/Starlak”. According to the leaks, this version could be a new type of high-end APU processor with RDNA 3.5 iGPU containing 40 CUs (Computation Units) and 55-120W TDP.

Therefore, we can say that Strix Point and Strix Halo/Starlak APUs will combine more GPU cores and RDNA 3.5 architecture. Therefore, both architectures will represent a significant development for APU systems next year.
