There has been a growing “artificial intelligence war” for months. Almost all companies are opening a new front in this war and integrating artificial intelligence into themselves in some way, but interestingly and suspiciously, Apple has been pretty quiet about it. This silence was recently broken: Apple is reportedly working on an artificial intelligence chatbot like ChatGPT.

Apple is developing its own AI tool

Apple engineers have reportedly named the toolkit “AppleGPT”, but it’s actually called “Ajax” because the major language model (LLM) is built using Google’s JAX framework. Sources state that Apple has multiple teams working on the project, with one team dedicated to addressing potential privacy concerns.

However, it is completely unclear what Apple will do with this chatbot. An unnamed source told Bloomberg they expect an official announcement next year with more details. In addition, next month, Apple will announce its periodic financial report, where hints of Ajax are expected to be seen.

On the other hand, Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement a while ago that productive artificial intelligence is something the company is “looking closely at”. It is noteworthy that this information comes after Cook’s discourse. It is also stated that Apple’s John Giannandrea, in charge of artificial intelligence, and Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering, are leading the initiative. Giannandrea was initially hired to oversee Siri and its machine learning capabilities.
