YouTube is reportedly running internal tests for a new service aimed at bringing online games to its platform. Google has sent an internal email inviting its employees to participate in the testing phase of its new YouTube service, dubbed “Playables,” the Wall Street Journal reported.
The news shows that YouTube Playables allows users to play various games directly on the YouTube web or mobile apps. The company will offer “easily shareable games” in the first place. Among the games available for testing, one of the most notable might be the popular arcade game Stack Bounce.
A YouTube spokesperson highlighted the company’s longstanding interest in the gaming industry and acknowledged that YouTube is actively experimenting with new features, including Playables: “Gaming has been a long-standing focus on YouTube. We’re always testing new features, but we don’t have anything to announce right now.”
During the slump in ad spend, the idea of online games integrated into the YouTube platform seems to align with CEO Neal Mohan’s strategic decisions to explore new growth avenues. Along with this strategy, YouTube has also confirmed that it is testing methods to block ad blockers on the site.
