United States Senate Leader Chuck Schumer plans to call for comprehensive legislation on security measures for artificial intelligence (AI).
Schumer will stress the urgency of congressional bipartisan action on the issue at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., on June 21. According to excerpts from his speech published by his office, Schumer plans to say that there is no choice but to acknowledge that AI change is imminent, and that a strategy that fosters innovation is needed.
Schumer Will Also Address The Challenges Of Making Legislation
Schumer aims to highlight the potential challenges of creating legislation for each problem that may arise with the advent of artificial intelligence.
Pre-planned questions include how much federal intervention should be in taxes and spending, and whether federal intervention is necessary. Schumer also plans to advocate for secure innovation that makes the public feel comfortable. Schumer’s statement comes after a June 20 meeting between US President Joe Biden and Silcon Valley experts on the White House’s commitment to seizing AI opportunities and managing risk.
During the meeting, Biden said he is focusing on citizens’ rights and privacy, as well as addressing prejudices and misinformation before the introduction of artificial intelligence systems.
Biden had previously met with executives at OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google’s Alphabet in April to discuss artificial intelligence.
