Announcing the M2 Ultra, the most powerful and latest member of the M2 processor family, as part of the WWDC 2023 event, Apple managed to create a great excitement in the users. So much so that Mac Pro and Mac Studio with M2 Ultra processors were among the devices that attracted the most attention at the event. In this context, while the excited wait continues, official reviews have started to come from the Mac Studio model with M2 Ultra.What does the M2 Ultra offer against the M2 Max?
For those who don’t know, M2 Ultra, based on Apple’s ultra fusion architecture, combines two M2 Max chips. At this point, it was stated that the processor, which contains 134 billion transistors, 24 CPUs and 76 GPU cores, has performance improvements of 20 percent and 30 percent, respectively, in CPU and GPU-based tasks. So what does Mac Studio, powered by M2 Ultra, offer in Cinebench R23, Rise Of The Tomb Raider and Final Cut Pro? Here are the results.
First of all, in Cinebench R23 tests, the M2 Ultra manages to surpass the performance of the M2 Max by 95 percent. Looking at the image above, we see that the M2 Ultra has achieved a score of 28,730, compared to the M2 Max’s score of 14,701. The M1 Ultra, M2 Pro and M2 have a score of 24,050, 14,753 and 8,914, respectively, in the same benchmark.Final Cut Pro and Rise of the Tomb Raider
On the other hand, a different scenario awaits us in the GFXBench results. In some tests, the M2 Ultra shows almost double the performance increase, while in another benchmark it lags 18 percent behind its predecessor. But the surprising point here is that in all other GPU-bound tests, there was a double difference between the M2 Max and the M2 Ultra.
In Rise of the Tomb Raider, we see that the M2 Ultra does not offer a big performance increase. Tested at 2K resolution and medium settings, there is only a 12 percent jump in the game. However, this score is thought to be related to the CPU bottleneck. As you know, the M2 Ultra has 76 GPU cores. This may cause not all cores to be actively used, at least in older games.Finally, in Final Cut Pro rendering tests, the M2 Ultra finished a 15-minute 4K video in 4 minutes, exactly 1 minute ahead of its predecessor. It should be noted that this result was somewhat disappointing. The doubling of Nike’s we’ve seen in other tests isn’t out of the question here. In export tests, however, the M2 Ultra displays an impressive 8-minute result, compared to the M2 Max’s 12-minute 30-second score.
In the light of the shared information, we can say that the M2 Ultra largely fulfills Apple’s promises. Despite minor glitches in certain scenarios, it manages to double the performance of the M2 Max in many tests. So what do you guys think about this?
