Sam Altman met with important names of technology and business world in India. In a question-and-answer session hosted by The Economic Times, Altman was faced with a deep and philosophical question from Cred founder Kunal Shah. The CEO of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, was visibly surprised for a moment. The entire exchange of ideas was on the profound implications of artificial intelligence and the future of human understanding, and the question was:

“After working on AI for so long, what have you learned about humans?”

“I thought intelligence was human”

Known for his candid statements, Altman paused for a moment to collect his thoughts before answering, and continued: “I grew up thinking that intelligence is something magical that is uniquely human. Now I think it’s like the main property of matter. It definitely changed my worldview.”

Drawing parallels with scientific discoveries throughout history, Altman underlined the insignificance of man in the grand scheme of the cosmos: “We used to think that the sun revolved around us and we were at the center of the galaxy. I feel like I’ve learned something profound, but I’m having a hard time putting it into words. Even if people aren’t special in intelligence, we’re incredibly important.”

Altman emphasized that there is something both ‘weird and important’ in people. Altman concluded by expressing his hope for the preservation of the essence of humanity. “Something strange and very important is going on with people, and I really hope deeply to preserve that,” he said.

“What would it look like if you started a company?”

Shah also tried to get some business ideas from Altman as soon as he got the opportunity. “If you could start four more companies, what would those companies look like?” asked. “I would pick the industries I thought I knew best and think about how AI would revolutionize those industries,” Altman replied. Later, however, Altman self-reflectively added a witty comment to his answer. “Maybe the real answer is that I need to think about how to use AI to build a better and faster AI company.”

Sam Altman has been on a tour that covers various countries for a while. Altman will visit Israel, Jordan, Qatar, UAE, India and South Korea as part of the program. Altman also plans to meet with Prime Minister Modi during his visit to India to discuss artificial intelligence, its effects and applications.
