After Elon Musk bought Twitter last October, Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has reportedly started working on his own social media platform, codenamed Project 92. During a company-wide meeting on Thursday, Meta product manager Chris Cox showed the assembled employees a series of user interface sketches that were quickly leaked online.
The existence of the project was first officially confirmed by the company in March. The company said they are working on an independent, decentralized social network for sharing text updates. The new platform, which Cox calls “our answer to Twitter,” will be a standalone program based on Instagram and integrate ActivityPub, the same networking protocol that supports Mastodon.
The leaked images include an image of the secure login screen, the main feed and reply screen, which is quite similar to Twitter’s current mobile app. There is no information yet about when the application will be released to the general public.
Chris Cox said he’s heard creators and public figures want to have a smartly run platform they can trust. Additionally, celebrities such as Oprah and the Dalai Lama were reportedly involved in the project.
