There was no way to securely share usernames and passwords with anyone else in Apple’s password manager, iCloud Keychain. Therefore, users had to use third-party password managers. With the iOS 17 update, users will be able to share usernames and passwords with group members they create, such as friends and family.

Passwords in iCloud Keychain can be shared

With iOS 17, Family Passcodes will let you share your passwords and passkeys with friends and family members. You will be able to specify the people with whom you can share passwords in Settings – Passwords. Not all passwords, but desired passwords can be shared with the person or persons in the group. There will be an option to create multiple groups. The person who created the group will be able to add or delete people at any time, or delete the entire group if they wish. However, the person to be added to the group must have iOS 17 installed and be registered in the contact’s contacts.

Shared passwords will be stored in iCloud Keychain and encrypted end-to-end. Alternative Passkeys to passwords can also be shared. It seems that the need for third-party password managers such as 1Password and LastPass will disappear for Apple device users.
