The HIV virus, which is transmitted to the person through blood and sexual intercourse, attacks the human immune system and weakens it. The virus, which increases the risk of infection in the body, leads to AIDS as a result of the progression of the infection. Although modern medicine has been able to ensure that people with the virus live under control, it still has not found a definitive solution against this virus.

On the other hand, people who survived the HIV virus without any medical treatment throughout history have never been encountered until recent years. Recently, a new one has been added to these people. A woman in Argentina diagnosed with AIDS in 2013 survived the virus without the need for a stem cell transplant, according to new research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

No trace of HIV was found:

The condition of the person in question was actually mysterious from the very beginning. Although the woman was diagnosed with AIDS in 2013, she did not show any symptoms of the virus. Tests found no evidence that the virus was alive and replicating in his body. The only evidence that the woman was infected was the presence of antibodies alone.

Since 2017, researchers have continued to collect blood samples from the woman. The DNA of more than a billion cells was meticulously scanned, looking for signs that the virus was still hiding, dormant, or ready to emerge at the right moment. They performed the same tests for the woman’s placenta after she gave birth in March 2020.

The results of the tests were published yesterday and it was announced that there was no trace of HIV in the woman. This indicated that the woman had cleared the deadly virus from her body without the need for any medication or stem cell treatment. The researchers explained that this case gives hope that the human immune system may be strong enough to control HIV and eliminate all functional virus.

Women were not the only cases of HIV survivors without treatment:

  • Loreen Willenburg, the first person to survive HIV without treatment.

The woman, known as the ‘Esperanza Patient’ for the protection of her confidentiality, became the second case to recover from HIV completely without treatment. The previous case was a woman named Loreen Willenburg, nicknamed the ‘San Francisco Patient’. On the other hand, the virus was completely eradicated with treatment in only two cases. These were two people named ‘Berlin Patient’ and ‘London Patient’ who were treated in the 90s.
