Both high-speed and high-capacity SSDs are rapidly entering our lives, and this situation only seems to improve. Because SK hynix has announced that it has started mass production of high-speed 238-layer 4D NAND memories. SK hynix states that it brings a significant increase in capacity by increasing the number of layers, as well as increasing transfer speeds by up to 50 percent.

238-layer 4D NAND memories go into mass production

SK hynix first announced its 238-layer 4D NAND Flash memory in August last year. The company recently announced that they have started mass production of these memories. These memories will be used in both SSD solutions and mobile devices. In fact, SK hynix has already announced that product compatibility testing with a global smartphone manufacturer is ongoing.

The smallest NAND in size, the 238-layer product has 34 percent higher production efficiency than the previous generation 176-layer product, resulting in a significant improvement in cost competitiveness. In addition, 2.4Gb per second data transfer rate is promised, a 50 percent increase compared to the previous generation. The company states that there is an increase of about 20 percent in read and write speeds.

SK hynix will begin supplying the 238-layer NAND product for smartphones after product compatibility testing with the global smartphone manufacturer is completed. This solution will also expand into product portfolios such as PCIe 5.0 SSDs and high-capacity server SSDs in the future.

On the other hand, the rapid development in the history of NAND memory is simply “fascinating”. Not much, just five years ago in 2018, SK hynix boasted 96-layer 4D NAND memories. The previous generation had 178 layers. Now it has 238 layer memories. Thanks to these, speeds increase by close to 50 percent and energy consumption decreases by 21 percent. Finally, SK hynix states that the new technology will be reflected in the financial statements in the second half of the year.
