Google released the Memory Saver feature for Chrome, which prevents inactive tabs from taking up space on your PC’s memory by sleeping, in an update in February 2023, after it was announced in December 2022. Now, the tech giant seems determined to further develop the feature.

Memory Saver will gain a new add-on that shows how much memory each tab is consuming before being disabled by the tool. It will be enough to hover over the tab to see the data in question, and there will be a card below that shows the exact amount of RAM consumed.

This feature can be incredibly useful to many, as it allows you to see important information without having to navigate through the various menus.

Android Police reports that Google is also working on another tool that displays the same information in the Memory Saver badge in the address bar. It seems that you will also be presented with a graph showing whether the amount of RAM you save with this feature is sufficient.

We can safely say that it is promising that Google is addressing one of the biggest Chrome problems, the massive RAM consumption. Considering that one of the most prominent causes of high memory usage is excessive tab opening, targeting unused tabs to save RAM is certainly a great idea.

However, considering that Microsoft Edge has a similar feature called Sleeping Tabs, which reduces memory usage by 85% and CPU usage by 99%, it’s clear that Google still has a lot of work to do.
