One scientist claims to increase lifespan by 20 percent after living underwater for 95 days. Joseph Dituri, 55, a retired naval officer, has been living in a 100 square meter capsule at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean for 95 days and researching how a pressurized environment affects the human body. The mission is also designed to break the underwater life record. The previous maximum stay underwater was 73 days. Dituri’s plan is to complete 100 days.

From March to June, doctors run tests to see how her body changes, including tests that measure telomeres, compounds at the end of chromosomes that shorten with age, Dituri said. He says they are now 20 percent taller and have 10 times more stem cells than when he was first transported to the underwater capsule in March.

Dituri experiences 60 to 66 percent deep REM sleep each night, and her cholesterol has dropped 72 points. The scientist didn’t elaborate on how their telomeres were measured, but there are testing services that measure their length from blood samples. Results take about two weeks to appear.

An effort to reverse the aging process
