Apple this week introduced macOS 14 Sonoma, the latest version of the Mac operating system. The new macOS release, due late 2023, includes a few new features, but not all will come to Intel-based Macs. According to the macOS Sonoma specs page, here are the new features that will be exclusive to Macs with Apple silicon chips:

What’s new in macOS Sonoma for Macs with Apple silicon processors

  • Presenter Layer, showing the presenter above the shared content
  • Game Mode that prioritizes CPU and GPU performance while gaming by limiting the performance of background tasks
  • New high performance mode in Screen Sharing app
  • Pair Made for iPhone hearing aids directly to Mac
  • Don’t call the assistant by saying “Hey Siri” instead of “Hey Siri”

Apple hasn’t specified why these features won’t come to Macs with Intel processors, but some features may not be coming due to performance considerations and the presence of the Neural Engine, which only performs machine learning tasks on Apple silicon Macs. Macs with Intel chips came out in 2020, and Macs with Apple processors have been on the market ever since. With the new Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra processor introduced this week, Macs with Intel processors have completely disappeared from the market.

macOS Sonoma beta available for free download

Like iOS 17, watchOS 10, the macOS Sonoma developer beta was also available for download after the event. Apple made developer betas free this year. To install macOS 14 Sonoma developer beta, it is enough to log in to the Apple Developer account.
