iPhones that won’t get iOS 17
The iPhone X, the device that started Apple’s Face ID era, will not receive iOS 17. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models, which were introduced with the iPhone X in 2017, will not receive the iOS 17 update again. That makes the iPhone XS, XS Max and XR the oldest devices to be eligible for iOS 17 when it launches this fall, but that doesn’t mean they’ll have every new feature.
Every phone eligible for iOS 17 will have the most important features: new design-driven contact cards, StandBy display for quick information while charging, and Check In to let someone know you’ve arrived home safely. Some features will be reserved for newer iPhone models. For example, FaceTime requires an iPhone 12 or newer for gesture-based reactions with AR effects.
With the discarding of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, we can now say that the eyes are on the next devices. So, the iOS 18 update, which will be released next year, probably won’t come to older devices like the iPhone XS and iPhone 11.
