With the start of the new month, Statcounter’s May 2023 web browser usage rates report has also been published. The May 2023 report details the most popular browsers and changes in their market share.
It probably won’t come as a surprise to anyone that Google Chrome is still number one on most platforms. The desktop version of the internet browser, which lost 0.2 points in May, had a share of 66.02%, although it fluctuated slightly from month to month.
Apple Safari, the only desktop browser not available on multiple platforms, continues to solidify its new position after overtaking Microsoft Edge in April 2023. Safari’s user base increased from 11.89% to 12.79%, widening the gap with Microsoft Edge. Microsoft Edge, on the other hand, once again fell below 10%, with a share of 9.91% (-0.98 points).
As Statcounter reports, Edge isn’t the only browser that has had trouble increasing its market share. Firefox continues to lose customers, too, and its share fell from 5.59% to 5.28% in May 2023. Firefox had a much more solid 8% market share in July 2022.
Opera was listed as the fifth most popular desktop browser with a 4.02% market share (+0.9 points). It may be worth noting that Internet Explorer still has a share of 0.45%.
