What is the total length of all roads in the world? These impressive maps give the answer

From the Great St. Bernard Pass in Italy to the northern coast of Scotland, there’s nothing like setting out on an epic journey. Have you ever thought about how many roads there are around the world? Worldwide, there are at least 21 million kilometers of roads, from major highways to rural roads.

Adam Symington created an incredible map showing the roads by continent to visualize how much area these roads cover. The map shows that more than 14% of the roads are in the USA and 1.24% in the UK.

Symington used the Global Road Inventory Project, which includes data from governments, research institutes and NGOs to create the map.

The roads were divided into four categories and colored accordingly. Major Roads (multi-lane highways) are shown in white, while Secondary Roads (paved, heavy-traffic roads) are shown in yellow. Tertiary roads (paved or unpaved residential roads) and local roads are marked in red on the map.

The data shows that of the 21 million kilometers of roads worldwide, about 3 million kilometers are in the USA. That’s almost twice that of China and three times that of India.

At the other end of the scale, the Pacific island nation of Palau appears to have one of the smallest road networks, measuring only 18 kilometers in length. However, many countries have even smaller networks. In the dataset, it is seen that the smallest is Norfolk Island and the length of this network is 10 km.

China tops the list in the main roads category. This is followed by the United States and Mexico.

Most places have no color at all, due to large areas with no roads, such as deserts in Africa and Australia.

A similar situation arises in Europe. While France, Germany, Italy and England stand out with a mixture of white and yellow, the former Eastern Bloc countries are mostly red.
