No one thought that Final Fantasy XVI would remain exclusive to PlayStation 5 forever. The first rumors suggested that it would come to PC sometime after the console launch, like the other games in the series. Obviously, that won’t happen, but Square Enix has firmly confirmed that it’s working on a PC port.

Final Fantasy XVI is coming to PC

In the statement, it was stated that the development of the PC version of Final Fantasy XVI will begin after the launch of the PlayStation 5 version on June 22. It is unclear exactly when Final Fantasy XVI will arrive on non-PlayStation platforms. On the other hand, it took a long time for other Final Fantasy games to transition from console to PC.

Final Fantasy XV came to PC in 2018, two years after its release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2016. The remake of Final Fantasy VII was released on the Epic Games Store in December 2021, a year and a half after its release on PS4 in April 2020. It recently joined Steam as well. Therefore, it seems likely that the PC version of Final Fantasy XVI will be released in the second half of 2024.

With these, the Final Fantasy series is known for adopting a drastically different story and gameplay with each new game, but with Final Fantasy XVI the change will be more drastic. While in most games in the series players control multiple characters in a command-based combat system like in traditional RPGs, Final Fantasy XVI has an action-based system. The game seems to be getting rid of the classic “JRPG” stigma. Even the producer company specifically avoids using the word “JRPG”.
