A new study has revealed that Earth has a new moon, or at least a ‘half moon’. A semi-moon refers to a space rock that orbits the Earth but is gravitationally bound to the Sun.

Named 2023 FW13

Discovered by experts using the Pan-STARRS telescope on top of Hawaii’s Haleakala volcano, this half-moon, named 2023 FW13, is one of the few known half-moons. Experts say the ancient cosmic meteorite was discovered in the BC. He thinks that it has been around the Earth for 100 years and will continue to orbit our planet for at least 1,500 years, until 3700.

It is thought to be 10 to 15 meters in diameter

While the size of 2023 FW13 is unconfirmed, asteroid expert Richard Binzel estimates it to be about 10 to 15 meters in diameter. This semi-moon is only a small fraction of the diameter of our Moon, but is classified as such because of its orbital characteristics rather than the size of a Moon.

Fortunately, neither 2023 FW13 nor a similar half moon named 469219 Kamoʻoalewa pose any danger to humans on Earth.
