iPhone 15 may surprise everyone when it comes to wireless charging

Apple could free the iPhone 15's wireless charging capability from the shackles of MagSfae. But this claim is confusing considering some previous claims.

One of the key features that will come with the upcoming iPhone 15 series is 15W fast charging, which will be applicable to any third-party accessory. Currently, Apple requires third-party manufacturers to have an MFM (Made for Magsafe) certification for this speed. Otherwise, the iPhone only charges up to 7.5W wirelessly.

The claim comes from a Weibo post. In this post, it is said that the iPhone 15 series may be capable of “open 15W wireless fast charging even without a certified wireless charger”.

The Weibo post reminds us that Apple has offered 7.5W Qi protocol wireless charging since iPhone 8, while iPhone 12 and later models use “MagSafe technology to achieve 15W wireless charging”.

If the claim is true, Apple plans to let users enjoy fast charging with the iPhone 15 series without having a certified wireless charger. However, some previous claims make us skeptical of the post. Because it has been rumored for a while that Apple will limit wired fast charging to “Made for iPhone USB-C” accessories. It seems like an interesting contradiction that the company has limited wired charging to certified products, while freeing wireless charging from its shackles.
