The latest contender for the Republican Party leadership, he said, is an advocate of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Ron DeSantis, the governor of the state of Florida in the USA, announced his candidacy for president. This statement took place in a Twitter Spaces session, which also included Elon Musk. Here are the details…

Ron DeSantis included Bitcoin (BTC) in his nomination statement

At a Twitter event where Ron DeSantis officially announced his candidacy for the US presidency along with Elon Musk and venture capitalist David Sacks, “It is clear that the current regime is against Bitcoin. “If this continues for another four years, they will probably eventually kill crypto,” he said. DeSantis said he sees crypto as an issue of personal freedoms. As governor of Florida, he signed legislation banning the use of central bank digital currencies within the state. DeSantis also used the following statements:

When I become president, I will protect Bitcoin and similar assets. This has risks, but people can make their own decisions. People have every right to Bitcoin. The reason people in Washington don’t want Bitcoin is because they can’t control it. They want to gain control over society. I don’t mind controlling everything that people can do in this field. Bitcoin is a threat to them, they have been trying to regulate it since its existence.

During the call, DeSantis insisted on Congressional authorization for the CBDC. During his presidency, he promised to refrain from it due to concerns about its potential abuse to influence politically unsuitable purchases. However, some argue that CBDCs provide constitutional protections over trade. He also argued that this provided defense against some counter-de-banking process. Regardless, CBDCs are one of the hottest issues in US politics.

DeSantis has few supporters for now

Samuel Armes, president of the Florida Blockchain Business Association, who helped draft DeSantis’ anti-CBDC bill, also spoke. In a recent interview, he said DeSantis’ office gets more calls about CBDCs than usual. A recent survey by Quinnipiac University also reveals interesting results. The poll shows DeSantis lagging behind Donald Trump among Republican and Republican-leaning voters. Because while the rate of those who support Trump is 56 percent, the rate of those who support DeSantis is 25 percent.

DeSantis is not the first Republican candidate to mention Bitcoin. Former pharmaceutical entrepreneur and longtime competitor Vivek Ramaswamy also shared. He shared his thoughts while attending the Bitcoin 2023 Conference in Miami. He said on stage that the next election should be a “referendum of fiat currency”. He also said “not alive” against CBDCs.
