Earlier this year, Adobe announced Firefly, a set of manufacturer AI tools and features for many Creative Cloud applications. Now, Adobe has announced that one of its Firefly tools, Generative Fill, has been added to the beta version of its popular Photoshop image editing application.

A press release by Adobe stated that Generative Fill for Photoshop is designed to help photo editors add, remove or expand content to images.

“Prolific Fill automatically matches the perspective, lighting and style of images to enable users to reduce tedious tasks while achieving impressive results. Productive Filling expands creative expression and productivity and boosts creators’ creative confidence with the use of natural language and concepts to create digital content in seconds.

A key feature of Adobe’s Firefly platform is that it uses openly licensed and public domain content alongside images from the company’s own Adobe Stock images. In other words, features like Generative Fill allow content to be enjoyed without having to deal with copyright restrictions.

Adobe also notes that it has its own AI Code of Ethics for labeling productive AI-generated content as such: “Generative Fill supports Content Credentials and helps people understand whether content is human-created, AI-generated, or AI-generated. It plays an important role in letting people know whether they are being edited or not. Content Credentials are like ‘nutritional values’ for digital content and remain associated with the content, ensuring accurate attribution and helping consumers make informed decisions about digital content.”

The Productive Fill feature in Photoshop is available today in the desktop beta. It is also included in the module in the Firefly beta application. The feature is expected to be generally available in the second half of 2023.
