TOP500, which has shared the list of the world’s best supercomputers twice a year since 1993, shared the first results for 2023. Thus, there was an important development regarding the Intel-AMD wars. Shared data shows that Intel has more supercomputers in the top 500, but AMD is pushing the top too. While AMD brought 121 of the world’s 500 fastest supercomputer systems to life, the number of AMD branded supercomputers increased by 29 percent year-on-year.

Shared data revealed that the world’s fastest supercomputer is AMD Frontier. With a performance value of 1,194 exaflops, the supercomputer drew attention not only with its speed but also with its efficiency. AMD Frontier was named the “Green 500” and ranked second in the list of the world’s most efficient supercomputers.

AMD continues to corner Intel

The vast majority of supercomputers in the TOP500 list are models from Intel. However, 21 of the 44 supercomputers that managed to enter the list for the first time this year belong to AMD. All these statistics reveal that AMD is outperforming Intel in both the TOP500 and the Green 500 in terms of acceleration. Let’s not go without mentioning that; AMD is also in the best position in the world in the HLP-MXP tests, where artificial intelligence measurements are made.

In the second list of 2023, we can see that Frontier loses place!

AMD has been working on a new supercomputer for a while. Dubbed “El Capitan”, this supercomputer uses AMD’s CPUs and GPUs for 2-exaflop performance. The supercomputer, which is planned to be ready towards the end of 2023, seems to be the new champion of the TOP500.
