Since leaving the company in 2018, Musk said many of its founding principles, such as OpenAI becoming a for-profit company, being closed source, and being actively acquired by Microsoft, have been trashed. Stating that OpenAI was established to be “a counterbalance to Google”, Musk states that the company has a great say in OpenAI by partnering with Microsoft.

Nadella denies Musk’s claim
Meanwhile, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella met with CNBC to discuss AI developments, and during the interview, Nadella was asked for her thoughts on Musk’s comments. In response to Musk’s comments that Microsoft is effectively controlling OpenAI with its massive $10 billion investment, Nadella simply replied, “that’s not really true.”Nadella says OpenAI is still controlled by a nonprofit board and Microsoft has no controlling interest in OpenAI. Also, Nadella states that OpenAI is very comfortable partnering with OpenAI because OpenAI has a “limited profit”. The Microsoft CEO also says that Microsoft is the first company to partner with a nonprofit with a board of directors.
