Lithium-ion batteries appear in most technological products today, and the environmental and safety issues of this technology are discussed day by day. At this point, while investments for new battery technologies continue, Samsung is reported to have made significant progress in solid state batteries. While details have yet to be shared, smartphones powered by solid-state batteries may be closer than expected.

Significant advancement in next-generation battery technology

For those who don’t know, solid-state battery technology will improve energy density, allowing larger capacities to fit into a smaller volume. As you know, Lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles bring with them various question marks due to environmental and safety problems.

At this point, the battery technology, which will offer equal or better performance compared to lithium-ion batteries, will also eliminate safety hazards such as fire risk. Considering all this, we can say that the new technology will be a milestone in both the mobile and electric vehicle markets.

Studies accelerated

Reportedly, Samsung has been working on an oxide-based solid-state battery for over a decade. What is interesting, however, is that the two separate divisions responsible for this development will try to incorporate the new technology into products. Accordingly, Samsung’s Electro-Mechanical division will offer solid-state batteries suitable for smart and mobile devices, while Samsung SDI will focus on developing solid-state batteries with sulphide electrolytes for electric vehicles.

It should be noted that in addition to Samsung, giant manufacturers such as Xiaomi and QuantumScape are also working on solid state batteries. So much so that QuantumScape is the most promising manufacturer among these names. The company, which has already started negotiations with automobile giants, has started shipments of prototypes for solid state batteries.
