Rapidus, a semiconductor manufacturer based in Japan, is making huge investments to revive the country’s chip industry. Rapidus aims to become TSMC of Japan in just four years with the construction of new facilities and cutting-edge 2nm production by 2027.

Rapidus, a startup Japanese semiconductor manufacturing company, plans to become a major player in the chip space in just four years. The firm’s targets appear to be quite aggressive. The company, which will compete directly with TSMC and Samsung, aims to start the production of 2 nanometer chips by 2027.

Rapidus’ targets are too aggressive

Rapidus is already investing billions of dollars in the new factory, with strategic investments from companies like Sony and Toyota and even the Japanese government. According to Bloomberg, the government has already allocated over $2.4 billion annually for the new semiconductor manufacturer. “There are huge opportunities ahead if we are first in the market and focus on producing chips for specific areas such as artificial intelligence,” Tetsuro Higashi, Rapidus Chairman of the Board, told Bloomberg.

However, TSMC and Samsung plan to produce 2nm chips by late 2025. Therefore, Rapidus will not be one of the firsts in this field, but it will not be far behind when its facility opens. Of course, if everything goes as planned and production starts in 2027. Rapidus is also confident that it can produce 1.4nm chips in the future. The biggest hurdle last year, according to Rapidus, was money. This is no longer an obstacle. On the other hand, in our previous news, we told you that the company has established a strategic partnership with IBM “to become a global leader in semiconductor research, development and production”. In the light of all this, maybe Rapidus will not be in the biggest semiconductor market in four years, but it will become a player whose name we will hear frequently.
