Samsung introduced the world’s first DRAM product with the brand new CXL 2.0 standard. The 128GB DRAM chip, intended for use in high-performance computers with servers, works with the Intel Xeon platform. Let’s see what improvements there are compared to the CXL 1.1 DRAM introduced in 2022.

CXL 2.0 DRAM supports memory pool

The new CXL standard supports the PCIe 5.0 standard and offers data transfer bandwidth up to 35Gbps. CXL 2.0 supports memory pooling, a memory management technique that connects multiple CXL memory blocks on the server platform to create a pool, allowing hosts to dynamically allocate memory from the pool as needed. These chips add more bandwidth and capacity to the main DRAM in a server, delivering faster AI and machine learning performance.

When will CXL 2.0 DRAM production begin?

Samsung will begin mass production of the CXL 2.0 DRAM chips at the end of 2023. The new chips will be available to customers in a variety of capacities for high-performance computing and servers.
