Reportedly, the suspect, identified by the surname Hong, is accused of using OpenAI’s popular chatbot ChatGPT to create news articles describing a deadly train crash that officials say is “false information”. Authorities found that multiple versions of the news were published simultaneously from 20 different accounts. Meanwhile, the fake news was published on Baidu’s blogging platform, Baijiahao.In the statement, Hong admits that he used ChatGPT for fake content and to make money. Meanwhile, the fake articles were viewed more than 15,000 times before they were removed. On the other hand, ChatGPT has been blocked for a while in China, but these restrictions can be bypassed with a VPN connection. China has accused Hong of “fighting and provoking”, which is broadly defined as undermining public order and causing mayhem in public places. In China, such accusations are commonplace in the spread of misinformation. However, the penalty for this crime can result in prison terms of up to 5 to 10 years.
