Luke Sernau, Google’s senior software engineer, said the company’s AI development is under threat by the open source community.
The engineer claimed that independent researchers in open source technology had made rapid and unpredictable strides in artificial intelligence technology. Luke Sernau documented an on-premises system in early April. The document, which was shared widely among Google employees, was shared by consulting firm SemiAnalysis on May 4 and began circulating in Silicon Valley.
Sernau: Open Source Communities Are a Threat to Google
In Sernau’s assessment, Google’s competition with OpenAI is diverting attention from the rapid progress in open source technology.
In his paper, Sernau wrote that Google is overly focused on tracking the progress of OpenAI. According to Sernau, as both companies struggled to outperform each other, open source technology has quietly moved forward, taking the lead in the AI race.
Known for investing in future-proof technologies, Google has played an important role in the development of existing AI-powered chatbots. But OpenAI has emerged as a pioneer in the field of generative artificial intelligence, which includes software that can create its own images, text, and videos.
Sernau argued that open source communities pose a real threat to Google because engineers develop models that rival the quality at big tech companies faster and at lower cost.
According to Sernau, these models are more customizable and more useful than Google’s own models. Sernau also worries that customers may not be willing to pay for high-quality technologies that are freely available in open source communities.
