Skyrim VR, the virtual reality version of Bethesda’s popular RPG game, offers a different experience to explore the game’s world and embark on adventures. However, when you want to talk to the characters due to the age of the game, your options are quite limited. The characters will run out of things to tell you after a certain period of time and you can only ask questions that you can choose from the menu in front of you.

What if the characters could present you with an unlimited number of dynamically generated anecdotes? Or if you could ask questions that aren’t on the menu? Or if the characters could remember their experiences with you in the game and talk about them at length? Art From The Machine, a modder looking for answers to these questions, is developing just such a mod for Skyrim VR.

How does the mod work?

The mod generates responses to characters using OpenAI’s large language model, ChatGPT. It also provides voice of characters with a program called xVASynth. With a program called Whisper, it allows players to speak into their microphones and allow the characters to understand them. It’s a combination of many different systems, and the first results are pretty strange answers. But at the same time, the light is being seen that NPCs equipped with artificial intelligence can create dynamic conversations.

Many different conversations and episodes are shown in the video, but the most interesting one is the conversation with Ulfberth War-Bear, the employee of Warmaiden’s shop in Whiterun. After installing the mod, Ulfberth knows the opening and closing times of the shop and can tell the player and even calculate when the shop will close based on the in-game time.

Ulfberth’s pronunciation is pretty bad, but his voice is pretty similar to him, and his lip sync is impressive.
