Last fall, the iPhone 14 introduced one of the most important features Apple has ever released: Emergency SOS via Satellite. This feature allows you to send messages or make calls with the help of a satellite if you do not have a cellular connection.
This feature has been available since November 2022 and since then we have heard many stories about how this feature has saved people’s lives. An incident shared by local news outlet KUTV describes how three college students out on a hike in Emery County, Utah, got stuck in the canyon.
“I went into hypothermic shock, I panicked and started freezing, and my friends saw me and were very worried,” said student Jeremy Mumford of hours spent in the canyon, where they were trapped in heavy rain.
Stranded students tried to use the satellite feature of their iPhone 14 phone to ask for help. Realizing that a satellite passes over their location in the canyon every 20 minutes, the students tried to get a signal to send a message to 911 by lifting their phones, and they were successful in this.
The iPhone 14 Emergency SOS via Satellite feature is available in the USA, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, England, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Portugal. While the service will be free for the first 2 years, Apple will announce its pricing expectation for the Emergency SOS Over Satellite feature at a later date.
