A Simpsons fan processed an old Simpsons video clip using his audio editing skills and managed to uncover a joke that has been hidden for years. Video editor Andrew “Ewzzy” Rayburn found the hidden joke in season 3 episode “The Otto Show.”

In the episode, as Bart is about to attend a Spinal Tap concert, Marge says, “I hope The Spinal Tap doesn’t play too loud.” Homer replies, “Oh Marge, I’ve been to thousands of heavy metal concerts and it hasn’t done me any harm.”

After this scene, the camera shifts to Homer’s perspective, showing that he actually heard everything Marge said muffled under a high-pitched hum that made words impossible to understand.

However, there is a joke underlying this hum. Although the creators of the show couldn’t remember what happened, they hinted at the existence of the joke in a DVD commentary. By identifying and deleting tones and amplifying the remaining sound, Rayburn made the joke understandable thirty years after it was written.

In the cleared voice, Marge is understood to say, “Okay, but make sure the group doesn’t model their attitude towards women, drinking, religion, politics, really anything.”
