The recently released Ryzen 7 7800X3D was supported by AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology, which makes a difference especially in cache-sensitive operations such as games. Despite its affordable price, the processor, which offers performance that surpasses the top models of both AMD and Intel, seems to take flight in Linux.

AMD processors are faster on Linux

To see the performance differences of the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D between Linux and Windows, Phoronix’s Michael Larabel tested the new processor on Ubuntu 23.04 and Windows 11 Pro. A total of 80 tests were run, and the Ryzen 7 7800X3D ran on average 7 percent faster on Linux than Windows 11.

While the Linux operating system outperformed Windows in 72 percent of the eighty benchmarks tested, it should be noted that the most up-to-date drivers were used in the test systems. The Windows platform was only able to take the lead in Blender 3.5 BMW27, Blender 3.5 Barbershop and Selenium PSPDFKit WASM benchmarks. In previous tests, the Linux performance of the Ryzen 9 7950X was taken into account. In those comparisons, the processor worked 6 percent more efficiently on the Linux platform.

Larabel says that AMD is focusing heavily on CPU optimizations within the Linux kernel. One of AMD’s areas of focus is known to be the P-State EPP driver, which improves performance and improves power consumption in the new Zen 4 architecture, as well as older generations based on the Zen 2 architecture. This driver is for managing tasks and forwarding them to the appropriate kernels. Actually, Windows has a similar function called the ACPI CPUFreq driver, but it doesn’t seem to work as efficiently as on Linux.
