US Facebook users with an active account between May 24, 2007 and December 22, 2022 will be able to get a share of a multimillion-dollar class action lawsuit regarding user privacy.

Facebook’s parent company Meta has agreed to pay $725 million to settle a lawsuit accusing it of giving Cambridge Analytica and other third parties access to private user data. The tech giant has also faced accusations that it misled users about how much control they had over their private information. However, Meta denies any wrongdoing.

Americans wishing to file a claim for the lawsuit must apply online by August 25, 2023. After a few questions have been answered in this application, he will be able to choose from a variety of payment options such as direct deposit, a prepaid gift card or PayPal. Alternatively, it’s possible to apply by mail, and you just have to print out a few forms and fill them out and then send them to a deal manager in Pennsylvania.

In 2018, Cambridge Analytica, a now-defunct consulting firm that worked on former President Donald Trump’s campaign, led to this lawsuit because it accessed the private data of some 87 million Facebook users. A researcher who was given permission by Facebook to use an app that collects user data gave the information to Cambridge Analytica.

This case later expanded to include other cases in which Facebook was accused of giving other third parties access to user data without their consent.

According to plaintiff’s lawyers, the proposed $725 million settlement was the largest settlement ever reached in a U.S. data privacy class action. It also stands out as the highest amount Meta has ever paid to settle a class action lawsuit.
