According to The Information’s report, it is stated that Microsoft has entered the hardware initiative to cope with rising development costs, and these chips are aimed at reducing its dependence on Nvidia’s GPUs.

The chips were developed under the codename “Athena”. It’s being tested by a team of Microsoft’s internal machine learning team and OpenAI developers. However, Microsoft has not yet made an official statement on the subject.

This development came at a time when other tech companies such as Meta, Google and Amazon were similarly developing their own machine learning chips. The report also sparked speculation about how Microsoft’s artificial intelligence chips will be used by OpenAI.

On the other hand, Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, said in a recent speech that the company’s design of GPT-4 should be rethought, pointing to the beginning of a new era in the field of artificial intelligence.
