READING NOW Big step for upcoming solar storms from NASA!

Dagger, a joint project of NASA, the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Department of Energy’s Frontier Development Lab, aims to help detect solar storms before they happen. Here are the details!

NASA Dagger Project: Deep Learning Geomagnetic Perturbation

Solar storms are a major concern for space weather forecasters. Because electromagnetic radiation and charged particles cause serious technological problems when hitting the Earth. These problems have serious consequences such as the collapse of satellites, communication systems and even energy grids. A joint project with NASA, the US Geological Survey and the Department of Energy’s Frontier Development Lab is investigating this topic, and the answer is, you guessed it, Machine Learning!

The team collected data on solar flares from multiple sun-tracking satellites and ground stations monitoring geomagnetic disturbances. The deep learning model they designed identified patterns in how the former led to the latter. After all, they named the resulting system DAGGER: Deep Learning Geomagnetic Perturbation.

The researchers used geomagnetic storms that hit Earth in 2011 and 2015 as test data. He found that DAGGER was able to quickly and accurately predict their worldwide impact. In NASA’s words: “Previous forecast models used artificial intelligence to generate local geomagnetic forecasts for specific locations on Earth. Other models that did not use AI provided global forecasts that were not so timely. DAGGER is the first model to combine rapid analysis of artificial intelligence with real measurements from space and Earth to produce frequently updated forecasts for sites worldwide that are both fast and precise.”

NASA Dagger project can reduce damage from solar storms!

The Dagger project will try to predict the occurrence of solar storms by tracking magnetic activity in the sun. These predictions will allow forewarning systems to be triggered and to safely protect sensitive systems such as spacecraft and astronauts.

The Dagger project also stated that people can also be affected by solar storms on the earth’s surface, and these storms can cause serious disruptions to electricity grids. Therefore, the success of the Dagger project aims to reduce damage from future solar storms. NASA aims to have the Dagger project ready for flight by 2025. This project will be an important step for space and earth. It looks like it will help make future space exploration and exploration safer.
