Microsoft’s investment of billions of dollars in OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and gaining access to almost all of its technologies worried Google. Microsoft has completely overhauled its Bing search engine with artificial intelligence, while adding similar technologies to its other services, such as the Edge browser and Office. Faced with increasing competition, Google may be developing a new search engine.

Google is developing a new search engine

According to The New York Times, Google is trying to create a search service that will try to guess what you want from it, in hopes of providing a “much more personalized experience.” A clear timetable has not been set for the project, but it is also said that Google has developed a number of new artificial intelligence features for its current search engine, under the codename “Magi”.

Among the features Google is developing is a chatbot that can answer software engineering questions and generate code snippets. The company has also trialled a feature that would allow people to search for music via a chatbot chat. According to The Times, the company has assigned more than 160 employees to the redesign.

Other new additions “in various stages of development” include a Chrome feature called “Searchalong”. This feature will allow a chatbot to scan the web page you are reading and present contextual information. For example, if you’re looking for a place to stay on Airbnb, you can ask the chatbot to tell you what to see and do near your planned accommodation. Another experimental feature, “GIFI” and “Tivoli Tutor” will allow users to ask Google Image Search to create images and chat with a chatbot to learn a new language. Google reportedly plans to announce Magi next month and introduce new features in the fall. Judging by the timing, we understand that the project will appear in I/O 2023. Additionally, the company plans to roll out Magi’s features to one million people in the US and reach 30 million users by the end of the year.
