Hz. A historical discovery was made about the Bible, the holy book of Christianity, which deals with the life, death and teachings of Jesus. A new chapter of the Bible, written 1750 years ago, has been discovered among the manuscripts in the Vatican Library.
The chapter, which has remained hidden to this day, was among the translation of the Gospel of Matthew. The section found by the medieval studies expert Grigory Kessel is also of great importance compared to the discoveries of the Bible manuscripts made so far.
The newly discovered section also revealed unknown details:
According to shared details, the newly discovered chapter contains a translation a century older than even the oldest Greek translations, including the Sinai Manuscript. Until recently, only two manuscripts were known, containing the Old Syriac translation of the Gospels.
The translation was found to have been written in the third century and copied in the sixth century. Although the entire discovered episode was not published, some details about the episode were also shared. The chapter offers more details than the Greek translation of Matthew 12.
In Syriac translation, “Grain began to cut off its heads, rub its hands and eat it.” While the sentence was found in the newly discovered chapter, “At that time, Jesus was passing through the grain fields on the Sabbath; His disciples got hungry and began to pluck the ears and eat them.” statement was included.
So how was this discovery possible?
The discovery was made as part of the “Sinai Palimpsets Project”. In the project, scientists aim to return texts that were deleted and written between the 4th and 12th centuries. The new discovery was made possible by the ultraviolet photography method applied to the manuscripts in the Vatican Library. The text was revealed by ultraviolet light.
