The Italian regulator has requested increased transparency and age verification measures to protect user privacy to lift restrictions on ChatGPT.
The Italian regulatory body responsible for data protection has identified the necessary steps to lift the restriction applied to ChatGPT. With an order issued in March 2023, the use of ChatGPT in Italy was prohibited. The regulator suspected that the artificial intelligence chatbot service violated the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and required the US-based firm to stop processing data belonging to individuals residing in the country.
Regulatory Authority Gives Time Until April 30
The regulator requests that OpenAI increase its transparency and issue a fact sheet that comprehensively outlines its data processing practices.
In a statement made by the institution, OpenAI is requested to immediately implement age restriction measures and adopt stricter age verification methods to prevent minors from accessing ChatGPT. According to the regulatory agency’s requests, OpenAI must ensure that all users exercise their rights regarding their personal data, including requesting corrections for false information generated about them by ChatGPT or deleting their data.
The regulator also requires OpenAI to give users the option to object to the processing of their data in order to train their algorithms. In addition, OpenAI needs to run an awareness campaign in Italy and inform individuals that their information is being processed to train their AI.
The Italian Data Protection Agency (DPA) has given OpenAI until April 30 to complete these tasks. However, some additional time has been allowed for the request to move to a more flexible age verification system. Accordingly, OpenAI has until May 31 to enforce the age limit of 18.
