The newly released Android 14 beta 1 can be installed on all compatible Google Pixel phones, unlike the previous two developer preview versions. So, what are the innovations and new features that come with Android 14 public beta 1?

Smart back button, new system share sheet

When you use gesture navigation on Android 14, a back arrow appears that understands your back gesture while interacting with apps. According to Google, the new predictive back arrow will increase its usefulness. This arrow will adapt to your wallpaper or device theme.

Another innovation is the new system sharing page, which Google describes as “superior”. Simply put, developers will be able to add custom actions to share pages that apps call. In addition, there are improvements in Android 14 that help sort more accurate options in the direct share menu.

Improvements to app language preference, accessibility restrictions

Android 14 develops a different language choice for each application introduced with Android 13, allowing dynamic customization of the language group displayed in the language list for applications. Keyboards can also detect the user interface language of the application used.

On the privacy point, Google has stated that they are limiting the visibility of sensitive user data to accessibility services that will really help disabled users. Accessibility apps will now pass Play Protect verification.

What’s new in Android 14 beta 1

  • New smart back button in gesture navigation
  • Additional actions to the system share menu
  • Enhancement in per-app language preference
  • Strict control of accessibility service

Android 14 beta 1 is not yet available for download on devices other than Google Pixel phones. On Pixel phones, it is necessary to join the official beta program or follow the manual installation steps. According to Google’s release timeline, another beta will be released in May. Then stable versions will start coming from June.
