Mercedes introduced the new model of the popular AMG series at a launch held today. The vehicle, which has a classic fabric awning and a sporty character, has returned to its old versions. Offering a structure for daily use, the 2+2-seater roadster comes with all-wheel drive for the first time.

The vehicle has a sporty profile with technologies such as AMG Active Ride Control suspension, AMG high-performance ceramic composite brake system with optional rear axle steering and Digital Light headlights offered as standard. With the start of sales of the car, the AMG V8 engine option will be offered with two different power versions.

The new Mercedes-AMG SL is based on the 2+2 seater vehicle architecture

The new Mercedes-AMG SL, long wheelbase, short front and rear overhangs, long engine hood, sloping windshield, cabin positioned close to the rear and strong rear stand out as the characteristic features of the body design. All these make up the body proportions of the SL.

The new SL is based entirely on the 2+2 seater vehicle architecture developed by Mercedes-AMG. The chassis is designed as lightweight composite aluminum. Thus, it consists of an independent aluminum space frame. Revealing a rigid structure, the design improves driving dynamics and improves in terms of sporty body proportions. The car’s new body was built from the ground up like the first SL in 1952. No components from another model such as the previous SL or AMD GT Roadster were used.

The two-part active air control system Airpanel contributes to efficiency. The first part works with vertical louvers hidden behind the lower air intake at the front, while the second part is located behind the upper air intake. It also has horizontal louvers. Normally all louvers are closed, which reduces friction and directs air to the underbody.

Standard active rear axle steering used for the first time

For the first time, the SL is equipped with active rear axle steering as standard. The rear wheels change direction either in the opposite direction (up to 100km/h) or in the same direction (faster than 100km/h) with the front wheels, depending on speed. Thus, the system has both agile and balanced handling, which are opposite features without rear axle steering. In addition to these, the system offers various advantages such as more controlled driving control at the limits and less steering effort.

Driving assistance systems monitor the environment

Driving support systems are capable of observing the environment with the help of numerous sensors, cameras and radars. As in the current C-Class and S-Class generations, the driver is supported by new and improved systems in everyday driving situations such as speed adaptation, distance control, steering and lane changing. Driving support systems can react in case of a danger as a requirement of driving conditions.

The new help screen on the instrument panel of the vehicle makes it understandable how the driving support systems work in full-screen view. It also shows it transparently. The driver can see his own car, lanes, lane markings and other vehicles in traffic, including cars, trucks and two-wheelers, in 3D. The status and working patterns of the support systems also gain a visual quality on this screen. The new animated support screen is based on a real-time three-dimensional scene.
