The embargo on AMD’s highly anticipated 3D V-Cache processor, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, has finally come to an end. In this context, the processor, which managed to get positive comments with its performance and the price it offers, has now been overclocked up to 5.4 GHz. So what does the 7800X3D offer when the 5.0GHz limit is exceeded? Let’s see together.

For those who don’t know, the Ryzen 7000 3D V-Cache family comes with lower TDP, clock speeds and overclock lock compared to the mainstream X series. At this point, AMD has disabled manual overclocking on the chip, though it offers a few exceptions such as Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) and Curve Optimizer. However, it seems that overclockers will continue to exceed these limits, as they always have.

Tested with the ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Hero motherboard and a special liquid cooling system in the trials carried out by SkatterBencher, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D managed to reach 5.4 GHz with the help of the External Clock Generator on the motherboard. However, it should be noted that the process in question is a bit complicated for end users.

Indeed, SkatterBench states that the Ryzen 7800X3D is very voltage sensitive, so manual overclocking is disabled by default. Even small increments can cause thermal issues that can break the CPU.

When we look at the published test results, we see that the performance of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D has increased by 7.7 percent overall and the single-core clock speed has increased by 10 percent. Although overclocking offers minimal difference in gaming performance, there is a big bump in Cinebench R23 and Geekbench based on compute performance.
