A new claim shared by MacRumors says that iOS 17 will not support the iPhone X. It is also said that iPadOS 17 will no longer support the first generation iPad Pro.

While iOS 16 has already ended support for many iPhone models, including the iPhone 7 and the latest iPod touch, this possible new change means that the first iPhone with Face ID announced is no longer supported by Apple.

The news source says it got this information from a “source with a good track record of upcoming software updates” but doesn’t reveal what it has previously been true. Still, MacRumors shares that iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will not be compatible with most devices using the A11 Bionic chip or older. The news source says the iPad 6 and 7, which use the A10 Fusion chip, and the second-generation iPad Pro, which uses the A10X Fusion chip, are exceptions.

MacRumors says that the reason Apple ended support for these devices with iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 is due to a bootrom vulnerability that affects all iPhone and iPad models with models ranging from A5 to A11 processors. Because this bootrom is running “read-only”, the company cannot patch these devices. Therefore, it is always possible to jailbreak the software restrictions of these devices.

We’ll likely find out which devices will support iOS 17 during the WWDC 2023 keynote on June 5. At this event, Apple will announce the new features of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 14, tvOS 17 and watchOS 10 and which devices will not support them.

However, even if iOS 17 doesn’t support the iPhone 8 or iPhone X, we know that at least Apple offers five years of updates and security fixes in the coming years.
