Some children, when it’s time to sleep, listen to a fairy tale and dive into the realm of dreams. Mark Zuckerberg’s daughters do this by learning to code. Most likely, one or both will be the future owner of Meta.
In a recent interview, Priscilla Chan, general manager of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), who married the owner of Facebook in 2012, described Mark’s routine of putting his two daughters, five-year-old Maxima and four-year-old August, to sleep. “Sometimes they read books together, sometimes they code together,” Chan told The Sunday Times Magazine. “Coding is an important skill that kids need to learn today, and it’s also visually stimulating. The girls have been doing the routine since they were three years old.”
Regarding when his two children were allowed to use social media platforms, Chan said, “They won’t be interested in social media until they’re 13, because that’s the rule.”
The timing of the interview is also considered interesting as it comes at a time when criticism of Facebook’s Instragam is harmful to young girls. Earlier this year, Zuckerberg shared a photo of his daughter August coding on her laptop and said, “Teaching a kid to code is one of the greatest tests of patience I’ve ever experienced.”
