Surprising Performance Test Results of Windows 10 and 11

Microsoft's new operating system, Windows 11, was officially launched this month. While most computers continue to use Windows 10, performance tests between the two operating systems can affect the speed of transition to Windows 11.

The new operating system of Windows, Windows 11, has been creating question marks in the minds of technology enthusiasts for a while. Windows 11 was officially released to users on October 5th. So, what are the differences of the new operating system from Windows 10? Let’s take a closer look at these performance differences.

Virtualization Based Security (VBS)

It has been found that the VBS feature, which can reduce game performance by 25%, comes activated on many Windows 11 desktop and laptop computers. Although this feature, which is also included in Windows 10, can be activated later, a version that is active as it is downloaded has not been found so far. You can find out whether this feature, which players will not be willing to use, is active by entering the ‘system information’ tab of Windows. Core i9-11900K and Core i3-10105F were loaded using BIOS version 1007 on Asus ROG Strix Z590-E Gaming WiFi motherboard to observe the differences in game and application performances of operating systems. MSI RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio was used for graphics and Crucial Ballistix DDR4-3200 was used for memory testing.

Let’s take a look at ‘DRAM latency’ before moving on to games and applications.

Differences in DRAM memory delays:

While using the Core i3-10105F, there was not much difference between directly downloaded Windows 10 and 11, while using the Core i9-11900K, the Windows 10 operating system provided superior performance. With the new update to Windows 11, which has 3% more latency when downloaded directly, an increase of 5% was observed in this time.

Differences observed in applications:

Adobe Photoshop 2021

It has been observed that the performance of Photoshop 2021 is almost the same when Windows 10 and 11 operating systems are downloaded and used directly. With VBS enabled, there was a 7% drop in the Core i9-11900K and a 3% drop in the Core i3-10105F.

Adobe After Effects 2021

The same performance was observed when using Core i9-11900K and Core i3-10105F on both operating systems. When VBS was activated, there was a 10% decrease in performance.

Adobe Premiere Pro 2021

As with the other two Adobe applications, both operating systems perform very similarly in Premier Pro 2021. Similarly, the only difference observed was the 12-13% drop in performance observed when VBS was enabled.

7-Zip File Manager

When the differences created by operating systems on 7-Zip were observed, it was observed that Windows 10 and 11 exhibited substantially the same performance when using Core i3-10105F, while Windows 10 outperformed Windows 10 by 3% when using Core i9-11900K.

Differences in game performance:

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was used to measure the impact of Windows 10 and 11 operating systems on game performance. There was an 8% decrease in performance when VBS was enabled, while no notable difference was observed between Windows 10 and 11. Looking at the loading time of the different levels in the game, it was found that Windows 11 was only one second faster.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 load time difference:

The installation time of Windows 11 was almost the same as Windows 10 when using the Core i9-11900K, while this difference increased by 40% when using the Core i3-10105F. Although this rate corresponds to a period of three seconds, it shows that the loading time of Windows 11 is longer.

While experts recommend downloading Windows 11 directly to get maximum performance, when we look at it in general, the performance difference between Windows 10 and 11 seems to be negligible.
