The Artemis mission program, which aims to set foot on the Moon again after 1972, started in November last year. While the third mission that will carry humans to the Moon is planned to be carried out in 2025, preparations for this mission are of course continuing at full speed.

So where does NASA plan to land the astronauts when it goes to the Moon? Of course, the rocket is not intended to be landed at a random point. While evaluating multiple potential points for landing plans, a photo was shared from one of these points today.

Astronauts can land on this spot on the Moon:

This image, taken by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter instrument, shows the Malapert crater located near the Moon’s South Pole. Malapert is known as one of the largest and oldest impact craters on the lunar surface. The crater is thought to have formed 4 billion years ago.

So why this crater and not another spot?

What distinguishes the Malapert crater from the rest of the Moon’s surface lies in its geological features. The region has steep slopes, high peaks and rocky ground.

Here are other potential landing points and their positions relative to Malapert:

Why are these regions all at the Moon’s South Pole?

Many factors play a role in NASA’s focus on the south of the Moon. The most prominent of these factors is that this region has not been discovered before. The area where the astronauts will land is always in the shade and it is suspected that there may be ice in the craters, as it receives no sunlight.
